The Diagnostic Value of Abdominal Ultrasound

Abdominal ultrasound is a non-invasive and highly effective way to evaluate the internal structures of a pet body. It’s commonly used to assess patients with non-specific symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, or abnormal lab work—and can often provide answers that physical exams and radiographs cannot.

Organ Systems Evaluated:

Liver and gallbladder

Kidneys and adrenal glands

Spleen and lymph nodes

Gastrointestinal tract (stomach, intestines, colon)

Urinary tract including prostate in male dogs

Abdominal blood vessels and mesentery

These systems are scanned thoroughly to look for changes in structure, signs of disease, abnormal fluid, or masses.

Conditions Often Identified:

Tumors or abnormal growths

Liver or Gallbladder disease

Urinary tract problems

Degenerative changes of chronic kidney disease

Abdominal effusions

Gastrointestinal obstruction or inflammation

Enlarged lymph nodes within the abdominal cavity

With imaging performed directly in the clinic, veterinarians can make faster decisions and offer more proactive treatment.

Preparing Pets for Abdominal Ultrasound

At Pet Ultrasound Partners, proper preparation is key to delivering accurate and high-quality imaging results. Dogs and cats scheduled for an abdominal ultrasound should be fasted for 12 hours beforehand to minimize gastrointestinal gas and improve organ visibility. The abdominal area is usually shaved to allow direct probe-to-skin contact, which is important for clear imaging. Water can still be offered up until the appointment.

Though many pets can remain awake during the scan, light sedation is strongly recommended. It reduces stress, limits movement, and improves both safety and image clarity—especially for nervous or uncomfortable patients. Sedation is administered by the attending veterinarian prior to the scan, and our Pet Ultrasound Partners team will wait until the patient is ready.

These preparation steps ensure a smoother, safer procedure and allow our team to provide the most accurate diagnostic support to your clinic.

How It Works: The Mobile Process

Bringing ultrasound services directly into your veterinary clinic is straightforward and efficient.

Step 1: Schedule the Appointment

Making an appointment is easy. Call or text (417) 622-1700, or send an email to: [email protected].

Step 2: Submit the Case Form

Before the ultrasound exam, completing the case submission form is essential, as it provides the reading specialist with the patient’s history, current treatments, and previous diagnostics, while allowing veterinarians to note any specific concerns or questions for review.

Step 3: Prepare the Patient

Ensure the patient is dropped off at your facility and has not eaten for 8-12 hours. Depending on the patient, the ordering veterinarian will provide light sedation as needed. Your team will assist in holding the pet during the exam, and monitoring the patient when sedation is used.

Step 4: Scan Day

Ultrasounds typically take approximately 30 minutes per patient. One staff member will be needed to help gently restrain the pet during the procedure. All ultrasound images and case history will be sent to the reading veterinary specialist for interpretation.

Fast Results and Clear Communication

With Pet Ultrasound Partners, veterinary clinics receive fast, diagnostic reports after every scan. Images and case notes are immediately transmitted to a veterinary board-certified specialist, ensuring timely review. A detailed report—including findings, clinical impressions, and treatment recommendations—is delivered within 24 hours, enabling your team to move forward with confidence.

For urgent situations, STAT reports are available within 4-6 hours for an added fee. Reports are sent securely via email or digital platform, helping your clinic maintain continuity of care without delay.

Billing and Payment

Pet Ultrasound Partners offers clear, clinic-friendly billing with a standardized fee per ultrasound and a single travel fee per visit, making budgeting predictable and hassle-free. Invoices are emailed directly to your clinic after each appointment—there’s no need to collect client payments. All payments are handled securely online, with credit card or ACH options available. This simple, streamlined process reduces administrative work so your team can focus on patient care.
